Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by guarding your teeth against acids that are caused by plaque bacteria and sugar. It helps by absorbing into the tooth enamel and restocking lost calcium. Fluoride disrupts acid production in the already erupted teeth of adults, as well as children. A fluoride treatment from time to time may be needed to help strengthen the enamel of your teeth.

Bonding to the weakening mineral layers of enamel, the fluoride helps the teeth to become strong again before the acids can do irreversible damage. Enamel is made almost entirely of minerals and so remineralizing by applying fluoride is a very effective way of strengthening the teeth.

Situations that may put adults at higher risk of tooth decay and therefore would benefit from additional fluoride include: gum disease, a history of frequent cavities, tooth sensitivity, dry mouth, and restorative treatments.

Fluoride treatments performed by a dentist contain a much higher level of fluoride than the amount found in toothpastes and mouth rinses. When caring for your teeth at home, we recommend that you brush twice a day with a toothpaste that contains fluoride. It’s beneficial to use such products as part of your regular oral hygiene routine to avoid significant problems in between your visits to our office.

It’s easy to have this procedure done when you’re in for your regular appointment. Dr. Hutto and our hygienists can help you know if your teeth would benefit from additional fluoride.
